Giving Gen Z a formal introduction to marketing and promotion.
Cake meets marketing
Gen Z are more or less born social media and technology natives (no cap), but work experience is often the first taste of marketing and promotion.
We recently hosted Year 10 student Anika, who counts baking cakes as a hobby and occasional side hustle.
Armed with this information, the tasks and activities Anika completed during her time at Conn3cted gave her a taste (pardon the pun) into how she can think differently about her hobby, all the whilst developing some new marketing skills.
An introduction to eCommerce
Every work experience block starts with the basics: how we think about content, how we plan it and how we bring it to life in a way that feels authentic (and not overly salesy).
Conn3cted is the team behind eCommerce platform Little Big Shop, so one of Anika’s main tasks was building her own store – a hands-on way to learn the importance of:
- strong branding
- consistent visuals
- choosing what to promote (and why)
- making products look irresistible online
Anika absolutely nailed it, creating a store that didn’t just show off her baking skills, but also made her cakes feel like the centrepiece of celebrations, where smiles, laughter and sweet treats all meet.
Building presentation skills (and confidence!)
Marketing isn’t just about making things look good, it’s also about communicating your ideas clearly.
Throughout the week, Anika got a behind-the-scenes look at tech agency life by sitting in on WIP meetings, scrums and presentations. Then on her final day, she wrapped things up with a presentation of her own.
She walked us through her Little Big Shop store and the social posts she created for her business, showing a strong understanding of what makes content eye catching and what makes people want to click, follow and learn more.
And as a bonus… we were also lucky enough to taste her work.
Yes, Anika made us a delicious cake. Yes, it was as good as it sounds.
Anika impressed us with her creativity, positivity and how confidently she took ownership of her tasks. We enjoyed having her in the office, and we can’t wait to see what she does next… whether it’s baking, branding or both.
Thanks for spending the week with us, Anika!
