In today’s digital age, technology is a part of our kids’ everyday lives. So teaching our youth to learn about tech and coding is a passion of ours, and we have held a few school holiday coding workshops over the years.
We caught up with alumnus Lachlan Murray, who spent some time being mentored and learning to code at Conn3cted in 2015, to see what he’s up to now!

How do you remember your experience at Conn3cted when you were younger?

My time at Conn3cted is the root of my interest in programming today. It was always fun coming in and learning new skills.

What have you been up to since then?

I’ve mostly just been learning. More languages, more complex projects, preparing for this year, year 11, where I can apply all of it in school tasks.

Tell us about your programming

Recently I have been trying to learn the development tools for my VR headset, as the original intention of buying it was to make games.
It’s been slow progress, going through the documentation, and it is certainly harder to create for it because there is no forum post from 10 years ago to help me out, but I will keep trying and hopefully make something great.

What do you love doing?

I love taking things apart and figuring out how they work. It’s how I initially came to love computers. I remember that my dad had a small computer that was being replaced.
So I took it apart and tried to piece it together, with the help of the internet, to see what exactly I was looking at. It was like a reverse puzzle.

What are you good at?

I can’t say that I’m really good at one thing in particular, although I am quite proud of the breadth of what I can do, from websites to multimedia.
I really feel like I’m only scratching the surface on all of these subjects though and can’t wait to dig deeper in the future.
Lachlan is now 16 and in Year 11.

So what’s your next step?

My next step is certainly my HSC. Getting good scores on that will  get me into the uni courses I need to get into IT.
