Hey Maylen – thanks for your time in helping to outline this case study. Could you give us a rundown of your role in developing the MicroGifts platform?
Hi! I’m excited to be here to present this UX case study.
My role in the MicroGifts project was multifaceted. Working alongside Conn3cted’s CXO and CTO, I was involved in crafting the user experience from concept to completion. I worked closely with the client to understand user needs and then turned those insights into intuitive design solutions.
In addition to designing the user interface, I was involved in creating wireframes and prototypes. This process was essential for refining the user experience and making sure the platform was easy to use.
Here’s how we approached this process for MicroGifts:
- Start with Sketches: We began by sketching rough ideas and layout concepts on paper or whiteboards.
- Create Wireframes: After refining our sketches, we translated them into digital wireframes using design software and specialised wireframing tools. Wireframes focus on layout, structure, and content hierarchy, providing a blueprint for the final design.
- Add Interactivity: Then we enhanced the wireframes by adding interactive elements to create prototypes. Using tools like InVision or Adobe XD, we incorporated interactivity to simulate user navigation and interactions within the platform.
- Test and Iterate: Finally, we conducted usability testing on the prototypes to gather feedback from potential users. Based on this feedback, we identified areas for improvement and iterated on the wireframes and prototypes to refine the design further.
Creating wireframes and prototypes allowed us to explore different design possibilities, gather early feedback from stakeholders and users, and ensure that the final product met the desired user experience goals for MicroGifts.
What were the key things you had to keep in mind when designing the MicroGifts platform?
Usability was of course, top of the list, as well as keeping it simple. We wanted to create a platform that simplifies the gifting experience for both senders and recipients. The one-card system was a key feature, which reduced complexity and made it easy to manage. And naturally, we ensured seamless functionality for MicroGifts across mobile devices as well.
Did you come across any challenges during the process?
Balancing functionality with simplicity is always tricky. We wanted the platform to be feature-rich, yet easy to navigate. This required careful prioritisation, and we kept tweaking the design until it all flowed smoothly.
How did you approach the mobile app development aspect of MicroGifts?
We adopted a mobile-first approach, leveraging smartphone technology to maximise accessibility and convenience for MicroGifts app users.
To ensure optimal user experience, we focused on understanding the needs and goals of our target audience. By analysing user behaviour, preferences and pain points, we were able to tailor the app to meet user expectations and deliver a personalised experience.
To gather insights into user needs and goals, we employed various research methods:
- User Surveys: conducting surveys allowed us to collect quantitative and qualitative data directly from users. We also provided stakeholders with prototypes for feedback, enabling us to analyse user preferences, pain points, and improvement suggestions.
- Competitor Analysis: We checked out competitor apps, analysing their user experiences for inspiration and industry best practices. This process helped us differentiate MicroGifts and create a unique user experience.
What aspects of the MicroGifts project are you most proud of?
I’m particularly proud of how we integrated innovation into the platform. Introducing features like Digital Cash and streamlining the gifting process with the one-card system truly sets MicroGifts apart. It’s rewarding to see how thoughtful UX design can transform traditional practices into modern, efficient solutions.
